Greek triple jumper removed from Olympic team after making racist comments on Twitter

Prejudice rears its ugly head again.

I do not know what it is about Twitter that makes people think they can just say whatever they want without consequence, especially athletes.

The modern athlete has more resources than ever to become the best at what they do. However, when used incorrectly these resources can hinder the athlete from doing what they worked so hard for.

A simple (but horrific) tweet caused this triple jumper her spot in the Olympics. She later apologized and deleted the tweet but the damage had been done.

This is something a nation in the middle of a horrid economic crisis does not need going on right before the start of the event in which it invented.

Favorite NFL Team

The Denver Broncos.

I’ll find and discuss interesting stories from every team from under the shield, but you may see my slip a little into my fandom when it comes to the Broncos especially with Peyton Manning calling the shots.

I’m excited to see how this season will play out since every team had a full offseason to prepare for the ultimate prize…the Lombardi Trophy.

BARCELONA—

After another slow start, the Americans come back to claim victory in their last friendly before the Olympic opener against France.

Spain won the first quarter with a strong showing from Serge Ibaka and the US dealing with foul and traveling problems.

However, the United States would overcome these troubles to take a 48-40 lead into halftime.

The rest of the game would belong to the United States as they turned up the defensive pressure on Spain’s guards and sped up the game.

Carmelo Anthony (27 points) kept the USA in the game in the first half and LeBron James (25 points) helped seal the deal. Kevin Durant had a strong 3rd quarter to widen the American lead despite being called for 11 fouls to Spain’s 5 in the period.

Pau Gasol led the Spaniards with 19 points and Serge Ibaka added another 16 for Spain.

The USA faces off against Tony Parker and the French on Sunday, July 29 at 2:30 p.m.

Back (As if anyone noticed I left)

Well for all 3 or so followers of this blog, I am back to bring the decent amount of sports knowledge I have to the Internet. Some personal issues kept me from running the blog the way I wanted.

Even though these issues are still prevalent in my life, I will use this blog and other interests of mine to power myself through these issues. I am excited to share my insight on all sorts of notable sporting events and stories as I scour newspapers & the Internet.

Everything from local (Hampton Roads area for me) to national sports is up for grabs and I will make this a pleasurable reading experience for those who find themselves reading this upstart blog.

That is it for now, stories coming very soon from Sports Under the Hoodie

My NBA tonight

The two games I have available to watch through my home cable package is comprised of one good and one not-so-good.

First the good: The Atlanta Hawks and the Miami Heat play in what should be a track meet on NBA TV. The Heat are fighting for the best record in the NBA and the home-court advantage that comes with that. The Heat and their superstars have shined all season and tonight should be no different.

Atlanta is part of interesting shuffle in which they could end up anywhere from as high as a 3-seed to as low as a 7 depending on how they and the other teams in that mix play.

Heat should win but the Hawks will keep it interesting.

Now the not-so-good: Lakers/Wizards on Comcast SportsNet. Lakers should cruise seeing as they are the better team but in this shortened season teams can ill-afford to take a game off. However, the Lakers did take a hard loss to a similarly young and inferior team in the Detroit Pistons last night so nothing is out of the realm of possibility.

After the Detroit loss, Kobe Bryant is back to wearing the clear mask after trying out a black version.

Lakers, like I said earlier should cruise, but need to stay focused and take care of business.

Lambeau Fail?
Whenever a team does well on the road in Green Bay, they’re given extra credit because of the location. The frozen tundra of Lambeau Field is legendary! Green Bay is cold, it’s snowy, and it’s full of rabidly cheering Cheeseheads. Opposing teams are lucky to come out of there alive, let alone victorious.
Or, they used to be. In the last decade, Lambeau Field has been far from unwelcoming. Here’s the results of the last ten years of playoff games in Green Bay:
January 15, 2012: N.Y. Giants 37, Green Bay 20
January 20, 2008: N.Y. Giants 23, Green Bay 20 (OT)
January 12, 2008: Green Bay 42, Seattle 20
January 9, 2005: Minnesota 31, Green Bay 17 (The “That was a disgusting act!” game)
January 4, 2004: Green Bay 33, Seattle 27 (OT) (The “We want the ball and we’re gonna score” game)
January 4, 2003: Atlanta 27, Green Bay 7
The Packers also defeated the 49ers 25-15 in 2002, a game that falls just outside of our ten-year window. Even including that game, that leaves the Packers at only 3-4 in home playoff games, all against lower-seeded teams. Three of those losses were blowouts. Not to take anything away from Eli Manning’s performance today, but it’s no longer that impressive to play well as a visitor in Lambeau. I’d be much more worried about the “Field Turf tundra” of the Superdome than the antifreeze-heated sod of Lambeau.
